You must examine any article that you will be altering very carefully. Depending on whether the darts have been slit or if it has clipped seam allowances, the amount you can let the garment out will be limited. For best results, always use an iron to get the creases out after opening the seams and again after restitching them.
Waistline Adjustments
Kidsline Crib Bedding
Your clothing should fit snug against your natural waistline. When dealing with waistbands that are to large, you can open the waist seam at the sides and take them in. Remember to take out an equal amount from both sides to keep the symmetry of the garment. Take the old stitching out and press the new seams open.
With dresses, you can reattach the waistline seam following the original stitch line after restitching the side seams. For pants and skirts, reattach the band as before, after the waistband sides are taken in.
If the waist on your clothes is too tight then it can be let out about two inches, depending on how much allowance the original seam will allow. Open up the side seams and appropriate half the entire ease needed to each seam. On a skirt, a little extra ease can be given by moving the button.
Large Abdomen Adjustments
Open the side seams and the front waist seam. You can let out the fronts of the side seams as much as 3/8". The fabric in the front of the waistline can be lowered 3/8" as well. You want to be sure to taper the new seam to the original stitching along the sides.
Shoulder Wrinkle Adjustments
For women with square shoulders, your garments may be wrinkled in that area. To get this corrected, first remove the sleeves. You want to restitch the shoulder seams, and gradually taper them down from the shoulder to the armhole.
The opposite is true for women with sloping shoulders. Sloping shoulders tend to wrinkle diagonally from the neck. To correct this you must first remove the sleeves. This time restitch the seams by gradually tapering up from the armhole to the neck.
How to Realign Darts
When realigning darts, you should point the darts to the fullest part of the body area that is being fitted and end about 1/2" from the part that is the most rounded. Pin fit the darts onto the right side of the clothing. On the other side, make new stitching marks with tailors chalk. You will want to try on the garment before you finalize the stitching. Newly stitched darts should be pressed toward the center of the clothing item.
